Annika Koops

For June 1st professional practice, we had Annika Koops visiting us for the lecture. I consider her as a very dynamic artist who utilizes a variety of methods to construct an artwork. Some artworks were computer-generated images, achievable by programs such as Photoshop and Z-brush for modeling and molding of the faces, though she sometimes do refine them with her hand crafts and vice versa. She strives for a realistic outlook of the figures however it is not entirely identifiable natural when perceived because she wanted to evoke an unsettling feeling of a cyborg presence. I personally talked to her after the show and she told me that the idea was derived from a esoteric theory by Michel Serres. The theory consist the idea that ‘parasites’ are living among the population disguised as humans and they possess a unique trait of appearing expressionless and cold. This appeals to me because i like learning about anything that is unconventional and there is a Anime called ‘The Maxim- Parasyte’ that follows this theory and it’s quite a good animated series to watch. Other than that, I also favor her other artworks that displays a mesh-like composition that depicts objects in its three-dimensional form. She did this with oil paint on aluminium and perhaps other surface materials. One of the series she has presented was based on myths, fables and biblical contexts, which again shares the same artistic theme and interest as me.
Overall, Annika is a very narrative artist and has a expansive approach in designing and creating artworks. Her interests resonates with mine so this will divinely inspire more features in the creations of my future art projects and hopefully i will able to commit in a series.
